Making Cookies Martha Style

The weather is beautiful today~! Sunny and mild wind blowing through the trees. I already went grocery shopping and got gas in the car.

I decided today was a great day for making cookies! I finally felt like my old self for the first day since the accident. I thought I'd share the recipe with you. It's from Martha Stewart's Everyday Cooking magazine.

Oatmeal-Almond Crisps

1/2 cup packed light brown sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1 large egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups rolled oats (not quick cooking)

1. Preheat oven to 350*. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, whisk brown sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla until smooth. Mix in oats and almonds.

3. Drop mixture by level tablespoons onto prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Spray the underside of a metal spatula with nonstick cooking spray, use to flatten cookies into 2 1/2 disks.

4. Bake until golden 14 to 16 minutes. For some reason mine only took 10 minutes to cook. So watch yours carefully! Cool completely on baking sheets. Handle with care; cookies are fragile.

Of course I tried one already. Yummy! Nice and crisp and not too sweet! Let me know if you like them too.

On my way to work Friday morning I was forced off the road and into the wet grassy median by and 18 wheeler. I'm not sure if he/she even realized I was there. I honked my horn but who knows what that person heard.

I am so lucky and blessed to be here now. When I saw the windshield break up I figured this was it, I would die for sure. God surely was looking over me as I went through the cables that seperate the median and hit another tractor trailer on the opposite side of the interstate. From what I understand that truck threw me back into the median.

A wonderful person came to my aid and stayed with me, he called 911 and my husband to get him to the accident. After driving his friend to the airport in Charlotte he then found the hospital I was at and waited to see me.

You all probably know we've had an unusual amount of snow here in South Carolina lately. The latest was on Friday night. Of course I was working late! I didn't get to leave until after 6PM. I couldn't believe it when I walked out to my car. It was covered in the nasty white stuff and more was coming down. I won't go into all the details but it took me an extra hour to drive home! By the time I got in the house I was literally shaking from the stress. Please no more snow!!

These scones looks great right? I finally found a recipe for them so I can make them at home. (Yes, we fixed the oven) So I thought maybe you would like to make them too! Here's the recipe; let me know how you like them!

Starbucks Orange Oatmeal Scones

A copycat recipe for Starbucks flat, dense orange flavored oatmeal scones.

I N G R E D I E N T S

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

2 cups oatmeal

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup very cold unsalted butter, cut into small chunks

1 egg

1/2 cup orange juice

1/4 teaspoon orange extract

1 tablespoon orange rind
1 cup raisins, plumped and dried

Glaze:Milk, sugar, orange zest

I N S T R U C T I O N S

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper (double two sheets if you have them — one inside the other). Preheat oven to 425 F.

In a large bowl, place flour, oatmeal, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda and mix together. Cut or rub in butter to make a mealy mixture.

Stir in egg and orange juice. Add orange extract and rind. Mix to make soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead for a few minutes.

Roll or pat out into a thickness of 1/2 inch. Using a serrated cookie cutter, cut into disks or rounds. Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar and orange zest.

Bake until lightly browned — about 14 minutes.

New items in my shop and a scary, smoky, spark filled story. To late for Halloween though!!

It was a nasty day outside, rain, fog drizzle. It was also my day off. Perfect time to clean the oven you say? Yes what a great idea. I'll do it!! Uh oh, something smells funny. I look in the oven and sure enough there are little sparks on the oven coil. Soon the sparks get bigger and bigger. Oh no, it's following the whole darn coil right to left. I turn the oven off and struggle with the oven latch, no luck it's not coming open. So I watch in anticipation of my oven catching the kitchen on fire! All of a sudden there is a small popping noise. Yep, the coil broke! Two days later and $60 poorer I have a new coil and the same (thank God) kitchen!

Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in this house? I would absolutely love it! It looks so fresh and I think it smells heavenly here.
Of course, I don't even know where this home is located. Most of the time it lives in my imagination among the other fantasy ideas I have of how I would like to live. I thought I would bring it out now and let you see what some of my dreams are about. I'm sure you have them too.
For now and probably in all likelyhood forever this will be a dream. But it's nice to step out of reality once in a while. So dream on.....

Polymer Clay And Me

Morning!! Here are a few pictures of my polymer clay experiments. I haven't put them in my shop yet but I will some time over the weekend. It was lots of fun, adding this and that, more and more. Now I know how some people feel when they think..hmm this is just not enough it needs more!! I used clay, of course, embossing powder, paint, liquid clay, sanding paper, molds and more. Then it's bake, add more, bake and bake and bake. Good thing I have a toaster oven just for clay and a room with lots of windows and a fan. The cats don't seem to mind so I guess it's ok. Take a look and tell me what you think? Thanks.

New Polymer Clay Pendants Soon

I have been diligently working with polymer clay recently and feel as if I've only gotten one technique mastered, well maybe not mastered but I feel comfortable with it. Now I'm trying to incorporate that skill with embossing. It is a lot of fun but very time consuming.

I felt this way when I was trying to wire wrap a briolette. You wouldn't believe how much silver wire I wasted. But I stuck with it and now think my wire wrapping is very good.

Hopefully I will have some photos by this afternoon. The pendants are drying as we speak! I think they're pretty cool. Please let me know what you think. Thanks and have a great day!!

Opps, I forgot the 50 reason photo. It's my left and right palm. Full of poison ivy. This sounds funny but trust me it itches all the time then it stings! Mr. Stripey

I am blogging about my garden this year because I'm hoping if I tell the world I won't give up on it. I've even taken pictures of it for you and me. I have three tomato plants, 2 yellow squash hills and a patch of basil in the middle. I'm really excited about the Mr. Stripey tomato. Oh go ahead and laugh I know his name is pretty hilarious but imagine a red tomato with yellow and green stripes! Just like the circus I tell ya! (I don't like to go to the circus but that's neither here nor there). Here's a few shots I took this past weekend when we planted it. I say we 'cause I got out there with the shovel and if you have never seen orange Carolina clay you ain't seen nothin". My husband felt sorry for me and came out with the tiller! Oh yeah, that was lots easier.

I was reading a blog that I enjoy every day and she decided to talk about smoking.

Oh man, I want a cigarette too! I quit about 3 years ago but the addiction is still with me. I swear I could buy a pack now and smoke every one!! THAT's why you shouldn't start smoking, it's hell.

My son comes over here for lunch sometimes and smokes on the porch. Of course I want to be with him the whole time he's here so I go out on the porch too. Then the other day I actually thought about lighting up one of his butts in the ashtrayand I don't even like Marlboros. I know!! That's horrible right? But I didn't do it. ha ha.

I love smoking!! But I don't want to end up looking like this!!! See Above.

Cozy Kitty

Baby is my youngest and smallest cat. She's one and a half years old and really tiny. Well, compared to Gilligan who weighs in at 14 pounds she is little. She gets into the smallest spaces and is the toughest of them all. She's a cozy kitty in the cubby hole of my desk keeping me company.

Get ready for summer!! I know it's freezing outside. Pelting frozen rain, snow drifts as high as your....you know, gusty winds and more.

So like I said...get ready for summer. It has got to come sooner or later right? It can't be gloomy and rainy forever!! I am not a winter/fall person.

I think she is a closet jeweler. I enjoy her company although maybe not that close. She is not a cuddly cat she would prefer to be on her own so it's a great honor to have her with me in my studio!!

A little bit about raku:

Earth - Fire - Water This is Raku.

Each of these individually made raku pieces is a work of art. Due to the "live" nature of raku glaze, each piece has its own unique patina.

Raku is made of pottery, then glazed and fired in a kiln, then dipped in water. This is a live art. Each piece is distinct. And beautiful!!

I've been on etsy almost a year and a half now. Sometimes I think I'm doing good other times not so much. I've joined one team and quit and now joined another one. Maybe I'm just not the team type? Anyway I've been adding new items, relisting, flickring, and more. Not to bad for a person who is computer illiterate. I am enjoying my time there and love selling my jewelry. Who knows where this will all lead in time. We'll see huh?

I forgot where I got these photos. But aren't they gorgeous. I haven't seen many cubes like this before. Oh, I know they are from Beads of Cambay. They have the most beautiful flawless stones. When I go to a bead show I head for their tables first. Then I get sick 'cause I want them all, especially the ones that cost over $300. or more. Some day...
